There are seven categories of Jobs, each of which having four jobs in a straight progression. Essentially only the first class in the progression is availible to every player, and to be able to use the next class in the progression, the player must level up the first class to level 2. For instance, Joseph wants to become a Dragoon, so he must level up the Knight job to level 2 in order to become a dragoon. To get to the third class one must have the other class at level 4, and to unlock the last class one must raise the second class to level 6. For instance, Joseph, now a Dragoon, wants to become a Templar Knight. He must level Dragoon to a level 4 job, then become a Defender and raise it up to level 6. There are seven such progressions, each of which is a favored progression of a specific race. Members of the race preferring said progression recieve a bonus to JP. Humans have no favored progression - they recieve the JP bonus no matter the class. The Job system breaks down as follows:

- The Knight Progression
(Soldier > Dragoon > Defender > Templar Knight)
Knights are the heavily armored melee class, the "tanks" if you will. Their skills are heavily melee damage based and are rather bonecrushing. The Knight jobs are the favored of Burmecians.

- The Fighter Progression
(Fighter > Monk > Gladiator >Kensai)
Fighters are more technique-based and more focused on dealing damage than Knights. Fighters do not wear heavy armor and thus do not have large HP bonuses. The Fighter jobs are the favored of Dwarves.

- The Shaman Progression
(Animist > Elementalist > Blue Mage > Astronomer)
Essentially "spellsword" classes who blend combat skills and lesser or unique magics. Shamans are quirky and not easy to use, but can be effective in the hands of a capable commander. The Shaman jobs are the favored of Vierans.

- The Rogue Progression
(Fencer > Thief > Ninja > Assassin)
Rogues are maneuverable dexterity-based combat classes, using maneuverability through combat and their impressive skills to strike at the most opportune targets. The Rogue jobs are the favored of Goblins.

- The Archer Progression
(Archer > Ranger > Sniper > Gunman)
The value of an accurate ranged unit that does not rely on magic needs no explaination, and no party is complete without one such unit. The Archer jobs are the favored of Mako Robots.

- The Priest Progression
(White Mage > Mediator > Bishop > Cardinal)
Holy magic, healing and defensive status is the name of the game with priests. Do not underestimate them as mere medics; the Bishop and Cardinal have a few offensive tricks up their clerical sleeves. The Priest jobs are the favored of Moogles.

- The Wizard Progression
(Black Mage > Time Mage > Summoner > Black Wizard)
Raw offensive power. The ability to destroy, to warp time and space to the will of one being, to summon creatures of infernal power. The power of the Wizards is seductive indeed, and dangerous. The Wizard jobs are the favored of Nu Mou.

There are also Expert Classes, classes that come by mastering several normal classes (Like, say, mastering White Mage, Defender and Knight to unlock the White Knight). While such combinations will not be listed here apart from the White Knights, we will list such classes: The White Knight, Dark Knight, Red Mage, Runic Knight, Samurai, Bard, Necromancer, Gambler and Mime. There are also racial-exclusive prestige classes; the Human's Master Swordsman, the Vieran Arcane Archer, the Dwarf Berserker, the Goblin Shadowstalker, the Moogle's Moogle Knight, the Burmecian Dragon Knight, the Nu Mou Sage and the Mako Robot Hunter Seeker.
